Communities are organizing in the face of mounting legal, political and economic attacks.
They are developing community leadership and mobilizing neighbors while building the people-power to deliver tangible improvements and long-term change. Their work holds neighborhoods together and pushes systems forward.
The Pooled Fund spent its first four years resourcing visionary grantee organizations whose work grew stronger with sustained investment. Contributions from generous, gutsy and impact-motivated foundations made this possible.
Yet Black-led grassroots community organizing remains underfunded, limiting the ability to address root causes, expand impact, and build broad-based movements across neighborhoods.

With input from organizers, a group of funders created an efficient, low-threshold application and grant-making process. Crossroads Fund served as fiscal agent and grants manager.
Between 2020 and 2024, forty-two local and national foundations contributed over $10 million to the Fund. These dollars bolstered grantees’ campaign work on a broad range of issues.
In contrast to common practices in philanthropy, the Pooled Fund awards flexible grants, trusting recipients to use the funding to strengthen and expand their work as needed.
The Black Researchers Collective evaluated the Fund in 2024, revealing successes and challenges. It includes recommendations for the future from funders and funded organizations.
